The Red-shouldered Hawk is a casual visitor to campus with five records of fall migrants (August-October) and one spring migrant (06 Apr 2003). It is a fairly common breeding resident in riparian and oak woodlands in southern California, and may even be found in residential areas with lots of trees.

Adult Red-shouldered Hawks are rusty red overall with distinct black-and-white barred wings and tail. Juveniles are reddish brown and have paler underparts.
